LUNG – The Word of the Month for September 2019

Every month, we take a look at a word in the headlines, in English, for your English. See more at The Word of the Month.

Definitions

Lungs: Organs used for breathing.

The lungs of the earth: Nickname for the Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer rainforest.

Lungs in the news

This month, large scale deforestation and fires are destroying the lungs of the earth.

The Amazon absorbs most of the planet’s carbon emissions, allowing us to pollute freely, as God intended.

Don’t confuse “lung” with:

Luge: A winter sport. Enjoy while we still have winters.

Lunge: A sudden movement forward. Ex: I lunged at the swordfish and punctured my lung. I regret nothing.

Lounge: A place to relax. Ex: Let’s sit calmly in my lounge while the planet burns.

Rhymes with “lung”:

Tongue: Connected to lungs via kidney by way of the left toe, according to our acupuncturist.

Dung: Animal feces. Put on your body to mask your scent. Also expect to be fired and/or divorced.

Young: Opposite of old. Let’s ruin the planet for the youth.
