Every month, we take a look at a word in the headlines, in English, for your English. See more at The Word of the Month.

Definitions

To record: to put into writing; to convert sound for reproduction or broadcast.

Record (numbers): the highest or lowest numbers historically.

(Vinyl) records: analog sound format for parents and hipsters. Very groovy.

Records in the news

This month, high temperatures in Europe set world records

Meanwhile, the US continues to record massive numbers of gun deaths.

Record-setting expressions

For the record: An official statement. For the record, we don’t allow plastic bottles on our private jets.

Off the record: An anonymous statement. Off the record, don’t worry, we have plenty of Kobe beef on board.

(To sound) like a broken record: To repeat the same thing endlessly. Sorry to sound like a broken record, but if we plant 3 million trees today, we’ll be carbon neutral.

Dubious 2019 records

Melted Ice: 11 billion tons of ice lost in Greenland. You can imagine our concern for Iceland.

Droughts: Ironically, we also broke the record for most floods.

Wildfires: Will the aliens understand our smoke signals are a cry for help?
